What to Consider When Choosing Rollers for Different Ink Systems

Not all printing inks behave in the same way, and this can affect which rollers and sleeves are suitable for the job. A covering that works well with one ink formulation may not be suitable for another, particularly when different chemicals or cleaning products are involved. Knowing what to look for when selecting these components can help prevent avoidable problems further down the line.

How Different Ink Systems Affect Roller Selection

Three common ink types used in printing are water-based, solvent-based and UV inks, each with its own characteristics.

  • Water-based inks are widely used in packaging applications. Although water is the main carrier, these inks can contain resins, additives and other ingredients that need to be considered when selecting rubber coverings.
  • Solvent-based inks require particular attention to chemical compatibility. Some solvents can cause certain rubber compounds to swell or soften, potentially affecting the roller’s dimensions and surface condition.
  • UV inks contain reactive ingredients that cure under ultraviolet light. Formulations vary, so always check the suitability of roller coverings and cleaning chemicals.

Where Rubber Tinting Sleeves Fit In

For printing and coating equipment that uses removable coverings, rubber tinting sleeves offer an alternative to replacing a complete roller assembly.

These sleeves fit over a suitable mandrel and can be changed when worn or when a different covering is required. This can be useful for businesses working with multiple printing applications.

When ordering rubber tinting sleeves, it’s worth checking the sleeve’s internal and external dimensions, rubber hardness and the compound required for the intended ink system. Having an existing sleeve specification or equipment details available can make finding a suitable replacement more straightforward.

Does the Roller Surface Finish Matter?

The rubber compound isn’t the only consideration. The finish and profile of a roller also depend on the job it performs within the printing machine.

For example, a roller used to transfer ink may require a different surface finish from one designed to guide or transport material. Grooved surfaces can be useful in certain material-handling applications, while other rollers need a smooth finish.

This is where specialist services such as taper grinding & grooving may be relevant. These processes can produce particular roller profiles or groove patterns where the application calls for them.

However, taper grinding & grooving isn’t automatically necessary for every printing roller. The required finish depends on the equipment design and the roller’s specific function.

Finding the right solution

Before ordering new rollers or sleeves, it’s helpful to have the ink type, equipment details and existing component specifications ready. These give a supplier a clearer picture of what’s needed and help avoid unnecessary guesswork.
