Cu toate acestea, Gordon Gould este considerat prima persoan\u0103 care a folosit cuv\u00e2ntul \u201elaser\u201d, iar unii cred c\u0103 el a inventat primul laser cu lumin\u0103. Gould \u0219i-a conceput inven\u021bia \u00een 1958, dar nu a reu\u0219it s\u0103 depun\u0103 un brevet p\u00e2n\u0103 \u00een 1959; ca urmare, cererea sa de brevet a fost respins\u0103 \u0219i alte companii au intervenit pentru a exploata tehnologia. Laserele cu CO2 func\u021bioneaz\u0103 bine la gravarea \u0219i t\u0103ierea materialelor care sunt slabe conductoare de c\u0103ldur\u0103 \u0219i\/sau electricitate (lemn, sticl\u0103, plastic,
