Sin embargo, se acredita a Gordon Gould como la primera persona en usar la palabra &quot;l\u00e1ser&quot;, y algunos creen que invent\u00f3 el primer l\u00e1ser de luz. Gould ide\u00f3 su invento en 1958 pero no solicit\u00f3 una patente hasta 1959; como resultado, su solicitud de patente fue rechazada y otras compa\u00f1\u00edas se abalanzaron para explotar la tecnolog\u00eda. Cuando se aplica energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica al tubo lleno de gas, excita las mol\u00e9culas de gas, que vibran y emiten luz que rebota entre los dos espejos. Para utilizar esta energ\u00eda, se permite que parte de la luz escape por un extremo del tubo, gracias al uso de un espejo semitransmisivo, que refleja la mayor parte de la luz hacia el otro espejo y permite que escape algo de luz.
